Notable TV, TwestivalTO, PeekShots and green goo

March 29, 2010

The title says it all and is also why I haven’t blogged in days. To be honest, I haven’t had the energy to get on a computer in any way. No twitter, hundreds of unread emails, facebook entries. It’s been bad.

Let’s start at the beginning; Thursday March 25, 2010 I had been sick all the previous week and was finally starting to feel better. I think I had the flu, lots of fevers, aches and a bad cough. I was still on the edge so I decided to take it easy on my body and not drink too much.

Thursday was NotableTV’s Samsung HD 3d TV Pre-launch event. This was the most exclusive NotableTV event to date and we got to be the first group of people outside of Samsung to see their new TVs the day before they were launched.

I rushing home to eat and change then met up with the awesome Sean Ward. We hit the streetcar and grabbed a coffee at McD’s before catching the Queen car all the way to past Jarvis.

Here’s what I wore;

I took this photo after I got home and looking at it now, I already looked half-dead. Rocked a new tie with a full Windsor knot, got lots of compliments.

I got to the Samsung event and grabbed this intro video;

This event was awesome with food and drinks as far as the eye can see. I kind of had a blast over at the section of the bar filled with Hpnotiq vodka shots. Tons of them just lined up on the bar with a beautiful women telling you to have as many as you want. As I was taking it easy on the drinking, I had 3 and grabbed a beer.

Here you can get a sense of the scene and the ambiance;

Delicious cupcakes for the munching. There was a whole pyramid of them;

Sean Ward being a bad boy?

Hung out with the always amazing Casie Stewart and the beautiful Fairlie sisters Carlie-Anne and Kristin. Sean and these 3 ladies made for an awesome time!

We finished up at the NotableTV event and Sean Casie and myself hopped in a cab for Tryst Nightclub and TwestivalTO 2010! You can read about what TwestivalTO is here.

Got there around 10:30 and hit the photo booth manned by the awesome Rosa Park. Yes, the party was already in full swing and most people where sufficiently liquored.

Here I am looking all Presidential, like Stephan Colbert;

Kickin’ it with Casie Stewart;

Humping a chalkboard I turned around backwards for later photoshop fun;

This party wasn’t free but OMG, it was sooo much fun dancing and hanging with all the awesome friends I’ve met in Toronto mostly through the twitter community.

Walked home and hit the sack at about 1:30am. I had an 8:15am meeting the next day.

Woke up like a zombie and got to work in time. Was to tired all day. But Friday night was Peek shots! A friend of mine Andrew Peek has decided to sell all his stuff, leave his job and travel for a few years. Awesome! He was having a get together at the Drake to say goodbye. I couldn’t pass up my chance to chat and say bye and good luck. So Krista and I headed over to the Drake. I was already so tired I couldn’t see straight.

Got there and tons our people had almost taking over the main floor. Drinks and hugs all around. After the music upstairs wasn’t so great, Krista and I decided to try out the Underground and DAMN! I heard the best DJ I heard in a long time play. Her name was DJ Annalyze and only after did I find out she’s a top DJ out of Chicago. We danced and drank way too much until 3am then had pizza and a cab home.

The next morning I woke up with the worst chest and sinus infection with green goo coming out everywhere. So that’s where we are now. Still sick and looking for a Doctor. And first time back on the computer in days.

March 25, 2010

or a Big Day in Social Media! See what I did there? I used a sexy headline to get your attention and cause you to visit this page. I used your PR tricks against you! muah ha ha ha.

But seriously, today is a big day for social media. Today is the second annual Twestival (3rd TwestivalTO). At a high level Twestival is an amazing time to meet all the people you talk to on Twitter everday IRL. Put people to avatar pics. Plus you get to drink to excess and dance to great music! What more could you want on a Thursday (other than Karaoke)?

Here are the official details:

What is Twestival?

On Thursday 25 March 2010, people in hundreds of cities around the world will come together offline to rally around the important cause of Education by hosting local events to have fun and create awareness.  Twestival™ (or Twitter Festival) uses social media for social good.  All of the local events are organized 100% by volunteers and 100% of all ticket sales and donations go direct to projects.  If you would like to get involved, please Register your City, Register your School, or Volunteer and we will get in touch.  Organizers will be given a handbook and invitation to our collaboration workspace.  Follow @twestival for updates.

“This year’s Twestival Toronto festivities will be held at Tryst Nightclub on Thursday, March 25th 2010…and I know you’re free because it’s a Thursday night! Tickets are still available and can be purchased on the Twestival Toronto site. Like any good event there will be fun hosts, loud music, cash bar, great company (ahem yours truly will be there!!) and more!  (Am hearing there may be some big raffles as well so bring a little extra with you!). All in all, it will be a great party with great people for a great cause.” – Aleksandra Stalmach

All the details can be found here:

Here is a great post by Aleks (@alisaan) about the top 11 reasons to come to Twestival!

Her post is probably a little more articulate than mine. But I would have added;

#12 – I’ll be there!! Here is me at TwestivalTO in the summer. The theme was old school Hollywood glamour.

There is me with the infamous Joallore (@clickflicka) and his cousin.

So get on Twitter and beg to find someone selling a ticket and get your ass there!

March 24, 2010 – New Album listenfest #2

Chris Brooker
March 24, 2010

Hey all, I didn’t expect this next album listenfest to come so soon but DAMN! There are so many good albums coming out.

On to the music;

Coheed and Cambria – Year of the Black Rainbow

I have to admit right off the bat, I f’ing love Coheed and Cambria. I own every CD every graphic novel released, tv shirts, etc. So one of my favorite bands ever.

This is the 5th album from Coheed and Cambria schedules to be released April 13, 2010 (already pre-ordered the deluxe edition with the 352–page novel). After a couple listens throught the whole album I’m left thinking, OH YA! this is Coheed!

This album rocks!, strong killer vocals, wild screaming guitar licks and a very epic and grand feel to everything. It’s a bit more melodic than past albums but I think that’s what the band is going so this time about.

There is nothing left to say, this album to me = summer! Get it now!

Asher Roth – Seared Foie Gras with Quince and Cranberry (Mixtape)

Asher Roth, I’m not sure why but people either love him, hate him or play just ignore him. Well I’m telling you if you don’t know him, you should. Even pickup his last CD Asleep In the Bread Isle for some quality rhymes and beats. Asher is almost always compared to Eminem as he’s white and he raps with a similar voice inflection. I’m not sure if that comparison helps him or hurts him.

This is a mixtape so the beats are all from existing that songs that you might already know but the flow is all Asher. His style is great, timing, cadance and rhythem are stellar on this album. Where is album is weak is in the lyrics. There is little variation of subject matter you’re garanteed that each song will make reference to him smoking weed or him getting laid. Which by this album is starting to be a tired theme. I think it’s this that’s keeping him from blowing up. In general the album is good but there are a few throw away tracks.

Pick it up if you’re bored and like hearing old beats with new words.

Barenaked Ladies – All in Good Time

I’ve never really been a big fan of Barenaked Ladies, I’ve never owned one of their CDs or ever had one of their albums on my iPod. I’m not sure why, I’ve always enjoyed their singles. Not pasionately like most Canadians but as songs I knew all the words to and would sing along with everyone else at the bar.

This is the first Barenaken Ladies album without the founding member Steven Page, if that matters to anyone.

It’s pop-y, melodic, with nice harmonies and clean guitars. There is nothing edgy or in your face about anything. It’s all very layed back and sweet with nothing really standing out to me. Your typical BNL album I guess, non offensive and decent work day Canadian pop-sorta trying to rock background music. Yes, there is some cowbell.

OrbLive for the iPhone is a fucking $10 piece of shit!

Chris Brooker
March 22, 2010

Hey, I know, strong title, well that’s how frustrated I am. Get it Orb? You clearly don’t.

OrbLive Website

For everyone else, let me explain.

Orb has been an application that’s been around for a while, I’m talking 3 years or so, that’s a long time in the computer world. That installs a piece of software on your computer and allows you to stream your media collection where ever you have internet. Which is great for people like me who have a shit ton of music and no portable device big enough hold it all.

OrbLive is $10 app in the iPhone app store that extends this functionality to the iPhone. You can stream your music and video to your iPhone on 3g or Wifi, which is awesome. If it WORKED!

Here are the problems;’

The dealbreaker: When listening to music on 3g or Wifi when you get about 2 mins into a song it stops, pauses for a second, and goes to the next track. You might think, oh I lost my connection or oh, my home computer must not have enough bandwidth. You’d be wrong. I have ass tons of bandwidth and solid connections. Every 2 mins song skips.

I’m not the only one with this problem. Here is the thread on Orb’s website with tons of people with the same problem for MONTHS! How can a $10 app that’s sole purpose is to stream music NOT do that 1 thing?

Other lesser complaints, but they all add up;

1) When you exit the application to answer a call, send a txt, etc. It doesn’t resume from where you left off. You have to start from scratch finding the files, playlists to start playing music again. Waste of god damn time.

2) It doesn’t gracefully adjust to your connection type or speed. I use the SiriusXM iPhone app all the time to stream music on 3g and Wifi it works great! Never drops the sounds. Go from wifi to 3g you’d never know. Phone drops to edge you notice a sound quality drop but the music still plays. OrbLive, you go from Wifi to 3g and the app stops! brings up a popup telling you it lost connection and makes you click “Ok” to resume on 3g. Or if it loses the signal, it start beeping like crazy in your ears over and over again for every song in your playlist.

There is a slider in the settings that let’s you “Optimize the Stream” for certain connection types but it doesn’t really do anything. And why do I have to set it? This should be handled automatically. HANDLE THIS FUCKING SHIT! IF I HAVE A SIGNAL PLAY MUSIC EVEN IF IT’S MONO AND SOUNDS LIKE ASS.

I’d probably have more but I can’t really use the app right now as it skips songs every 2 mins. Which is more frustrating than you can imagine.

March 22, 2010 – New Album listenfest

Chris Brooker
March 22, 2010

It’s Monday March 22, 2010 and I have a number of new albums that just hit my mp3 player. I figured instead of just listening to them personally and keeping my opinions to myself (mostly). I’d do a mini review of them.

Here’s what’s on the list today.

MGMT – Congratulations

The much anticipated 3rd release from MGMT. I managed to grab a high quality AAC 256 leak of the new album and gave it a listen.

After single listen all the way through, I’m not blown away. It good and it has it’s moments when I really like it but I’m not sold yet. I think I might visit this review again after a good number of listens. Perhaps it will grow on me.

It’s very orchestral, and kind of brings to mind a weird cross between the Beatles and Panic! at the Disco. Ya, I said weird.

There are a few stand out tracks and put forth my choices for singles and their order.

1) Congratulation (the title track)
2) Flash Delirium
3) Song for Dan Treacy (maybe, if it makes it to 3 singles)

MC Frontalot – Zero Day

The king of Nerdcore has released his 5th album. The album doesn’t officially drop until April 6th, 2010 but if you order it now, you can download the whole thing now then receive the CD in the mail. Or you could just grab it from all the other sources out there.

Get it! That’s all I have to say. If you enjoy hip hop and lyrics about things other than popping rubber bands, making it rain, lac’s on dubs, Hennessey, droppin’ low, twerkin’, etc. You’ll love it. MC Frontlot has smart, tight, flows and great timing. Quality hooks and choruses with a very high production value.

Flobot – Survival Story

According to that image it’s now available on iTunes. Yay?!? anywho.

Liberal, High Energy, Violin, Rock rap, that’s Flotbots. Most people got hella sick of hearing Flobots last year as the singles Handle Bars and Rise got played to death everywhere.

The single off this album is White Flag Warriors strong track in the vein of Rage Against the Machine but not as hard.

General impressions of the album;

  • rhymes are tight and delivered with passion
  • the viola’ist Mackenzie Roberts is still cute
  • The always audible viola keeps making me think I’m listening to Yellowcard
  • I like me the rock rap
  • Fun, upbeat album with serious subject matter

MTV Fora Magazine Launch – Part 2: The Launch Party; Theme: The Prom!

Chris Brooker
March 18, 2010

Please check out MTV Fora Magazine Launch – Part 1: The After Show if you are just coming along to this post.

Fora is a new online magazine that MTV is launching in April that will focus on beauty and trends. The difference here is that Fora will be made up of articles contributed by the top bloggers and experts in Canada. It’s going to social, geared towards the current young, hip, connected lifestyle, which will make this a very unique magazine to watch.

The Launch Party for the magazine started with Dan Levy and Jessi Cruickshank introducing the magazine and showing the first promo. They’re both featured in the first issue, The theme for the spring issue and the theme of the party are/was The Prom.

Here’s the video;

Here are some of the hottest top blogger ladies in some kick ass Peach Berserk dresses all ready for prom. Can you guess who is who?

(left to right: Lisa Charleyboy, Raymi Lauren, Carly-Anne Fairlie, Don’t know but if you do tel me :), Casie Stewart, Breanna Hughes)

While at the party I got a chance to have a quick chat with Joy McCarthy (Joyous Health Blog) one of the magazine’s contributors. Also some stylings by Sean Ward. (Sorry for the poor lighting)

The party was tons of fun and I got to chat with lots of kewl people, including Dan Levy about life and how much work him and Jessi put into all their shows. I would have liked to take more video but as you can see by the last clip there just wasn’t the light for it and I don’t have a pro setup. Mics, lights, a steady camera man (steady as in holding the camera, not as in dating), etc. We spent a good 1.5 hours munching on tons of cheese and drinking wine, chatting with people and on our way out hit the Prom themed photobooth. I’ll post my photos once I receive them.

Here you can see the smoking hot actress Kristin Fairlie working it for the camera!

Sean and I just chatting about the venue, Jessi Cruickshank hanging out in the back. This is the teaser video I used the other day.

Once I’m able to score more photos from the Event I’ll update this post. So the take away here is MTV, Fora, get excited, when it goes live, check it out!!

Anyone interested in a Part 3 – The After Party? Also, I’m going to put together a single all encompassing video of all the footage I took, stay tuned!

I haven’t had a chance to edit any of the footage I took yesterday yet, but here’s a little taste of things to come. This is a raw unedited clip from the MTV Fora launch event party featuring Sean Ward and myself. With a cameo in the background by Jessi Cruickshank.

To add to the awesomeness here is a video from Sean Ward discussing the full flavour of beer.
